Fishing Report - January 2010
SNOW! SNOW! SNOW! We’ve been blessed with snow this winter. The great thing about snow is that it brings the water table up…..and it is up! Water levels are at a five year high. Fishing has been slow due to the extreme low temperatures, but with warm weather forecasted for the remainder of January, fishing is starting to get better!! The delayed harvest sections of the North Toe River and the “new” DH section of Wilson’s Creek are both fishing pretty good. There are still a lot of hold over trout being caught. San Juan worms, wooly buggers, and egg patterns have been working well. The key to catching fish during the winter months is to drift slow and deep. Extra weight can many times be the difference in catching fish and not catching fish.
Wild waters is fishing good as well. Wild browns have spawned in most of our streams and the action is reflective. With a few warm days we are experiencing some good hatches.
Looking for the fish of a lifetime on a fly? Try Muskie! If with cold temperatures the muskie bite has been on. Not for the faint at heart, muskies on a fly rod is said to be the most exciting fishing found during the winter months here in Western NC.
